Bluish-purple hued flowers, spring-fresh hikes, and craft breweries without the crowds are a few of the compelling reasons to hit the road this season. It’s true; the summer crowd doesn’t know what they’re missing in the meantime.

Texas Hill Country

Cowboy towns, gigantic limestone caves, and ribbon-like rivers make Texas Hill Country a super diverse landscape to discover. Despite a rocky terrain, these lands are filled with natural springs and wide flowing rivers — the Blanco, Guadalupe, and Pedernales among the more noteworthy. In springtime, bright colored bluebonnets (the state flower) erupt onto the scene and draw onlookers from April onward.

Shenandoah National Park

With over 850 species of flowers, the NPS of Shenandoah National Park made an entire weekend to celebrate — and it’s called Wildflower Weekend. This year, however, it won’t be limited to one weekend alone. They’ll have virtual walks all season long, which you can scope out before hitting the trails in real life. These 200,000 acres of land are replete with cascading waterfalls, quiet woodlands, and hikes to stunning vistas. “Spring fresh” is an understatement.

Macon, Georgia

Known as the “Cherry Blossom Capital of the World”, this small town in Georgia doesn’t play around. Here, you’ll find the International Cherry Blossom Festival every March, thanks to over 300,000 Yoshino Cherry Trees that bloom in late March. Not only are the trees a sweet sight to behold — there’s plenty of other happenings — concerts, arts and crafts, quality eats. If you’re skippin’ town from our Nashville depot, we highly recommend stopping off on your way to the coast. Destination Savannah, perhaps?

Lake Superior + Brockway Mountain, Michigan

You’ll find Brockway Mountain Drive waaay up at the top of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, which sounds impossibly far away, but it’s only a 7 hour drive from the Twin Cities. Come mid-April, there’s a massive migration of birds of prey — drawing seasoned bird enthusiasts and clueless-yet-curious onlookers alike. This official Michigan Wildlife Viewing Area offers untouched places to enjoy Lake Superior, from sand dune shores to rocky bluffs.

Where to hike first: Keweenaw Point Trail

Wasatch Mountain Range, Utah

Canyon meadows and glacial lakes dot the landscape in the Wasatch Mountain Range, a Utah fave that has been popularized by nearby Park City and its myriad ski resorts. Things are still thawing a bit in the springtime, but you’ll get to experience the trails, mirror-like lakes, breweries, and all of Park City with less of the crowds. With day hikes and overnighters, there’s a ton of variety for every type of hiker from rookie to hardcore pro.
